Ways to start your tax strategy for 2020 ... right now

Ways to start your tax strategy for 2020 ... right nowWays to start your tax strategy for 2020 ... right nowIts no ones favorite subject to talk about and if youre self-employed, it might even send shivers down your spine.Tax knowledge isnt a skill set most professionals or entrepreneurs are schooled on in college, however it is one that could leid only set you up for success but save you money, too. President of Westwood Tax Consulting LLC, Josh Zimmelman explains the best time to think about next years taxes is well, right this second. It makes sense to prepare at least a year in advance because if you plan strategically, you can make the most of the new tax laws and make 2020 a fiscally beneficial year, he explains. But as youve likely gathered from your own research and your fluctuating income, everyones tax picture is not only varied, but it changes over time.In addition to hiring a trusted accountant who can explain the jargon to you in a meaningful, digestible way, consider the se recommendations from Zimmelman on how to win bigIf youre a small geschftliches miteinander owner or independent contractorTheres nothing quite as rewarding as branching out on your own- and finding success. Especially when it comes in monetary value that allows you flexibility and personal, professional growth. But while being your own boss is liberating and exciting, it also comes with new responsibilities you likely werent proficient at before. Though a definite learning curve, Zimmelman says there are a few easy ways to get startedSet up a SEP IRAZimmelman explains if you expect to earn a significant income, you should prepare financially to be able to put away the maximum SEP retirement contributions. Have we s-lost you yet? Its not as complicated as it might seem A SEP IRA is a great alternative to a 401(k) for small businesses because it offers many of the same benefits, Zimmelman continues. This allows employers can contribute up to 25 percent of employees salary up to the annual maximum. While he notes the 2020 max isnt available yet but for 2019, it is currently $56,000 and it is expected to go up somewhat with inflation, as it does every year.Consider SEP IRA retirement savingsSo youre a powerhouse party of one? Go you For self-employed and independent contractors who have access to SEP IRAs for retirement savings, its a bit more complicated to calculate the limit. Even so, its worth looking into, according to Zimmelman. The 25 percent of their self employment income has to be calculated after the reduction in income that comes from the SEP contribution and self-employment taxes. So the number ends up being about 20 percent of gross income for many independent contractors, he shares. However, if you expect to earn significant income, you should leise prepare to put away the max in contributions.Think about your business structureWhen you start to build your empire, growth pains will definitely be part of the package. As you expand, Zimmelman suggests giving your business structure a second examination. If you arent already incorporated, your accountant can investigate whether it makes sense to become an LLC, an S or a C corporation. In fact, even if youre an independent contractor, an LLC or a corporation might be beneficialDifferent business entities come with different tax benefits depending on your needs, so make sure youre set up for the most beneficial tax year in 2020, he notes.Plan write-offsThough tax laws have shifted on what can be written off and what cant be lately, Zimmelman says the more you can plan your purchases in advance, the more hard-earned cash you will save.Businesses can write-off the full cost of new equipment and other property- instead of depreciating the expense over a few years. So if youre thinking about investing in your companys growth, you should plan out the years spending now, he explains. Always check with your accountant before making any major purchases though to make sure that your spendin g has a positive impact on your future taxes, instead of a negative one.Set up estimated tax paymentsFun fact (you probably already know) everyone has to pay taxes on income they earn. But when you shift from an employee to owner, the amount you pay shifts, since your employer isnt fronting some of the taxes. This can be a major shock if you arent prepared for it.In order to avoid a big tax bill all at once, some people make estimated tax payments four times a year instead. You can calculate your estimated tax by figuring your expected adjusted gross income, taxable income, deductions, and credits, Zimmelman explains. Most people use their income, deductions, and credits from the previous year as a basis for this estimation. Then you divide the year up into four payment periods. If youre a full-time employeeSo youre happy in your current gig- and not interested in managing every facet of a business. No biggie. There are still ways to brighten your tax bracket. Here, a few to get you startedAdjust your withholdingGot married? Had a baby? Bought a house? Zimmelman says its time to update your withholdings. You can do this by filing a new W-4 with your employer. A marriage, divorce, or new job are all reasons to file a new W-4. If you owed a lot of money at the end of the last tax season, then your withholding might be too low. If you receive a large tax refund, but found yourself struggling paycheck-to-paycheck, your withholding might be too high, he continues.Budget so you can contribute to your 401K moreNot only will this help you now- but it paves the road to the days when you dont have to work nose to the grind anymore. Zimmelman says when at all possible, contribute to your 401k to the max. He says for 2019, the limit increased from $18,500 to $19,000.There is also an additional $6,000 catch-up contribution limit for individuals over 50 years old. If you have a traditional IRA instead of a 401(k) you should still try to contribute the max, because contributio ns are usually tax deductible if they need certain conditions, he adds.Lastly Get organized - and informedNo matter what type of company you have or are part of, the best ways you can set yourself up for tax happiness (or at least, content) is to inform yourself and stay organized.Whether you want to deal with paper or go totally digital, make sure you work out an organization system that works for you, Zimmelman shares. Youll definitely need to keep track your income and expenses, but might also need to set up a phone log or mileage log depending on how you do business.Start the year off right. If you make an effort to stick to your system at the beginning of the year, then you wont have to stress in April looking for receipts and pay stubs. Dont wait until next tax season to look into it. Start now

Hired! Change Your Resume; Change Your Life

Hired Change Your Resume Change Your LifeHired Change Your Resume Change Your LifeRelocation can be the answer to provide new opportunities.During stable economic times (common wisdom dictates), people change jobs to get more responsibility, more money or a better work environment. During bad economic times, they dont change at all unless their situation becomes unmanageable or theyre laid off.Only rarely, especially in a down economy, will a job seeker admit to having left one job simply to go to a new city wherbeie no job is waiting but a happier life may be. That is, you dont hear it often from anyone who has outgrown their 20s, let alone their 30s or 40s.Jill Greene, 52, did just that, and ended up in a new environment and a new job she loves. My husband and I lived in the Midwest our whole lives, and wed reached a point where we were both disenchanted with our jobs, said Greene, who worked as a marketing manager in Des Moines, Iowa, for a series of advertising agencies and veteri nary pharmaceutical companies. We decided that if we were both going to look for new jobs, why do it in Des Moines? We just said, Were done with the cold and the snow and moved to Texas.Greene and her husband Ricky, a CPA, packed up the car and drove south, ending up between San Antonio and Austin, where they looked around to see if they liked the place, decided they did, rented a house, then drove back north to pick up the rest of their stuff. We have no kids all our family is back in Indiana, so we had notlagehing holding us back, Greene said. We did a lot of planning financially, so we knew how long we could last. If neither of us had another job by July, we would re-evaluate if neither of us had anything by October, wed move back to Iowa, where we still had a house. It didnt take that long, although the insecurity of not having a job and shock of having to find one in a place where she welches completely unknown made Greenes three months of unemployment more stressful than shed ex pected. She hadnt had to look for a job among strangers since getting into the marketing business after college. For 20-something years, my job moves were due to somebody recruiting me based on my experience they knew me or my work, she said. For that first interview in Texas, I welches very ill-prepared. I thought it would be just like before - it would be fine. They didnt know who I welches and could not have cared less. Looking back on my resume and performance, they must have thought I was some kind of idiot.Greene spent days researching best-practices articles on how to do a job interview, how to write a resume and how to search for jobs online. She realized she had spent years helping companies market products but never thought about how to market herself.A resume evaluation from Ladders helped turn that corner. The woman who evaluated my resume implied it was a wonder I got any calls back because my resume was in such bad shape, Greene said.Greenes resume listed her jobs and e ducation but didnt put the highlights of her career up front or emphasize her most visible strengths and accomplishments. It also didnt create a recognizable person or set of skills that would catch the eye of a recruiter or hiring manager faced with dozens or hundreds of resumes.I sat down and really rewrote it and took a really hard, honest look at myself, Greene said. I had to dig back and look at my accomplishments over time. A lot of things I had done I hadnt thought that much about at the time, so I hadnt written anything down. I had to go back and remember all that and describe it and why it was important. It was a real shock. Her resume consultant identified specific accomplishments to highlight not just that Greene had helped launch a product, but that it was a USDA-regulated product the company was able to ship in an unusually quick 18 months, and that after X number of months on the market the product garnered Y amount of sales. If I Can Sell a Toothbrush for a Cat It was all about specific ways you helped a company move forward, Greene said. And in the interview, too, you have to walk in and tell them exactly what you can do for them and tell about a time in the past that you did that for someone else. I told them once I had worked for a company that among other things made toothpaste and toothbrushes for dogs and cats. I said, If I can sell a toothbrush for a cat, I can sell anything. As it turned out, being able to sell things for animals if not dogs and cats was the key to landing a new job in marketing at Applied Biosystems, which makes products designed to sequence and analyze DNA and RNA samples, often for companies diagnosing sick animals or making drugs or other health-related products for them.Applied Biosystems posted this job that said they needed someone with an animal-science degree who had done marketing with animal products, Greene said. I pulled it off and said, This is who I am. Greene graduated from Purdue University with a degre e in animal science, which covers most of the health and biochemistry issues that affect agribusiness diseases and medicines for cattle and chickens, animal biochemistry and other topics critical to those running commercial farms and ranches. She spent her career in Iowa working mostly for companies marketing products and pharmaceuticals to animals usually farm animals rather than dogs and cats. So when Applied Biosciences needed marketing help for a small division in Austin selling products designed for veterinary diagnostic labs trying to identify avian flu or salmonella in farm animals, the match seemed perfect. The recruiter told me, and this is the first time I ever heard this, that they werent even talking to any other candidates, because they didnt expect to find me, Greene said. She got the job with little drama during the interview process and has been in love with it ever since.Much of the reason it went so smoothly, though, is that she prepared for it using the advice shed gotten from Ladders and other sites. You want to be humble, but in this situation, you just cant. You have to dig hard and find the one or two things you can do for them, she said. I asked them to give me a specific challenge they had, the hardest thing theyre facing. Based on that, I could say Heres something I did in the past to solve a similar herausforderung and what I would do to solve this one. Its almost like consulting advice you run the risk of being way off-base, but even if you are, they like that you have opinions. The company must have liked what she said shes currently working on the marketing plan for the product her hiring manager brought up in the interview. (It has not yet been announced.)What she didnt encounter was any hint that her new company was uncomfortable with her age or that any other companies she interviewed with were, either.I did have one friend recommend that I just take all the dates off my resume, which drives some people crazy, and put one thing in there like mentioning I had run a half-marathon last year, that shows youre really healthy and energetic and no one will even think about the fact that youre over 50, she said.Another trick that worked well was to remember the kinds of books on the shelf of the hiring managers she interviewed. At Applied Biosystems, one manager had a marketing-theory book called Blue Ocean Strategy How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant by W. Chan Kim and Rene Mauborgne.I didnt have it, but I went out and bought a copy and skimmed it, she said. So in my follow-up note I was able to say I thought they needed to pursue a Blue Ocean strategy to differentiate themselves and what that meant and make some suggestions on how to do it.It worked. So did Texas. Greenes husband has put off finding full-time work to act as general contractor on a house the two are building. On the day she spoke to a reporter from Ladders, it was 38 and partly cloudy in Des Moines 75 degrees and su nny in Austin. I have yet to put on a jacket this year, Greene said. I just love it.

How to Transition From Military to Tech Career

How to Transition From Military to Tech CareerHow to Transition From Military to Tech CareerRobert Half Technology conducted a panel interview with three military veterans on our staff in an effort to better understand some of the challenges veterans face in finding new and meaningful careers upon leaving the service, and how they transitioned from military to civilian jobs. Here, we begin a two-parte series of QAs based on that interview. (You can find part two of the series here.)The panelists included Zach Torre, a former Army sergeant with experience in networking security, fiber optic repair, and transmission operation, now working as a network operations specialist Jim Lantz, whose government and military career spanned more than two decades, including stints as a detachment commander, exchange officer and Middle East policy planner, currently working as an IT portfolio manager and Philip Bull, a former Air Force satellite communications technician and unit deployment manager no w working as a senior tech asset management coordinator. In our first post, we discuss the many assets these professionals bring to their respective Information Technology teams. We also take a look at how veterans can prepare before separation, and after, to market themselves and their skills - many of which are transferable and in high-demand across industries.1. How do you plan ahead for the move from military to civilian jobs?Zach Torre Resume writing, cover letters, networking and company research all can be done before you leave the military. In my case, planning for finding a job welches easy - working with a recruiting agency like Robert Half Technology made the transition smooth for me.Jim Lantz The onus is upon the service member to take the transition assistance training thats offered prior to separation - attend the classes, do the homework and really prepare yourself to leave. I did the homework. I had a multiple types of resumes based on the jobs I was pursuing. I was networking with friends, family, colleagues and even people I didnt know.2. How important are the resume and education?Jim Lantz Both are important. You never know where your resume may end up. I emailed my resume to an IBM executive in Southern California. He saw the potential I had and emailed it to some of his business colleagues, and eventually it came across our CIOs desk in the San Francisco Bay Area. He looked at it and said, wow, this guy doesnt have a background in IT, but I bet he could help me in this particular job (project and finance management).Philip Bull I landed several interviews simply because I had a degree. One recruiter told me he was leaning toward an applicant with more job experience, but he wanted to talk to me because I had a degree, an impressive resume and portfolio.3. Why a career in Information Technology?Philip Bull I fell into IT asset management in the last three years of my military career. I joined what was previously a one-man shop. The command er came in and said I need you to fix this program. The inspectors came back afterwards and said this is one of the best programs weve seen in the Air Force. I got lucky. Robert Half Technology recruited me three years ago and Im still here.Zach Torre The tech field is always progressing. It keeps you wanting to learn more. Consumer tastes and the tools they are using are constantly evolving. And thats why Im here. Maybe Ill figure out a way to develop something that no ones developed yet.4. What are the most transferable skills you build in the military?Philip Bull For so much of my career, I was in positions where I was writing procedures and policies. And while I may not have been directly supervising people, I was indirectly supervising them and affecting their careers. Its those skills that I developed over time that helped me in my job search. Also, the military has an adapt-and-overcome mentality that transferred well to IT because technology is always changing.Jim Lantz Soft skills are key - the ability to learn, the ability to lead and the ability to communicate are skills that are valuable in any job, but particularly in the tech industry. I told my boss when I interviewed I had limited experience with technology, but over the course of my career I learned Arabic and worked extensively in the Middle East, a place very different from where I grew up, so I was pretty sure I could learn IT. I think he felt confident in my ability to learn and gave me a chance.5. Any advice for other vets considering jobs in IT?Philip Bull Learn how to translate your technical skills into IT skills because thats whats going to get you noticed. But also learn how to sell your soft skills. The technical stuff is impressive, but its going to be the soft skills that will get you the job.Zach Torre Expect to start at the bottom, but work your way up quickly. The technical piece isnt as important as you convincing the interviewer that youve got the ability to learn. And thats something weve all proven in the military. If youve got the ability to teach us, weve got the ability to learn.Robert Halfs Career Opportunities for Veterans - This website features job-search tools for the move from military to civilian jobs. In addition to job listings, Robert Half has a wide range of resources for helping veterans find jobs.Additional resources may be found at the Four Block Foundation, a New York City-based nonprofit organization offering career development and transition support services to returning veterans and their families. This post has been updated to reflect more current information.

How to Face Unexpected Challenges of an Internship

How to Face Unexpected Challenges of an InternshipHow to Face Unexpected Challenges of an InternshipAs with any experience, you may find yourself faced with obstacles in your internship that you hadnt anticipated. When going into any new situation, we usually assume that everything will run smoothly and that the overall experience will offer what we hoped for in this case, an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. Unfortunately, you may find yourself faced with challenges that you dont feel able to handle. The two important things to remember is always to maintain your professionalism and always work to find ways that are mutually beneficial to both you and the employer that will help solve the problems you are facing. Below weve listed some tips on how to face some of the challenges that you may find cropping up over the course of your internship. Not What You Expected One thing that might make your internship go more smoothly is to map out your expectations wi th your teamberaterin beforehand. Once youve done this, you can always go back and reiterate your expectations. If you didnt come to an agreement during your interview, you might want to have a discussion with your supervisor as soon as possible to see if you can come to an agreement on what you will be expected to do. Communicating your discontent will give your supervisor an opportunity to make some changes whenever possible. Always keep your communications on a positive elende by letting your supervisor know that you are interested in learning and doing more to help with the running of the overall organization. Employers respect employees (and interns) who show initiative and can communicate their needs and expectations clearly using positive communications that serve to meet both their needs. Conflict With Your Immediate Supervisor Here again communicating your needs and expectations honestly can often defuse a stressful situation. Supervisors generally want their interns to have a positive experience and usually enjoy mentoring them throughout the internship experience. Differences of opinion are a fact of life and learning how to deal with personality differences is a great lesson that can be used throughout your internship and your future career. Again being mindful of your supervisors goals and expectations, you will often be able to work things out for the better. If you deal with problems constructively and not ignore them, you will have a much better chance of solving them. Bored With Not Much to Do It is an easy one. Ask your supervisor for additional work to do. If he/she does not have any work for you, ask if you can contact other departments to see if they have work that you can help with. If ansicht tactics fail, use your time wisely by reading journals in the field, scheduling informational interviews with co-workers, and offering your knowledge and talents to devise new and better ways to do things within the department. Office Po litics Are Difficult to Handle As an intern or new employee, it is recommended that you stay away from office politics as much as possible. You want to promote yourself as a professional and engaging in backstabbing, and negative communication will not serve you well in meeting your personal and professional goals. As a new professional, learning how to handle these types of difficulties is an excellent learning experience in itself. Developing open, honest communications can often diffuse many situations that occur in the workplace. By demonstrating your maturity to handle these and other situations that often occur on the job, you will be providing the employer with a positive impression of your interpersonal, problem-solving, and communications skills and your ability to deal with anything that may come along.

Should You Make a Lateral Move - The Muse

Should You Make a Lateral Move - The Muse Should You Make a Lateral Move In your career, if youรข€™re not moving up, it can feel like youรข€™re not moving at all. And because of that misconception, lateral moves donรข€™t always seem like a great idea. Youรข€™ll have a comparable title, make a similar paycheck, and essentially be on the same level as you were in your previous role- but in most cases, further from a promotion than if youรข€™d stayed put. So if you have the opportunity to make a lateral move into another department or functional role at your company, a few key worries may keep you from pulling the trigger. In most cases, though, those worries arenรข€™t cause for concern; rather, theyรข€™re benefits waiting to happen. Consider these common doubts: Worry #1: This Wonรข€™t Help Me Advance My Career At first glance, a lateral move may not seem to push you up the career ladder. If youรข€™re moving from a sales associate role, for example, to a marketing associate, youรข€™re basically starting from scratch in your new department- you probably would have been closer to a promotion if youรข€™d stayed in sales. But that doesnรข€™t mean you career isnรข€™t going to move forward. A lateral move can actually give you more marketability in the long run. By understanding more aspects of the company as a whole and how different departments fit together, youรข€™ll likely be better suited for management or executive positions down the road. And, your experience in your prior role can help move you forward, too. When I moved from a technical support position into marketing, I was already intimately familiar with the companyรข€™s products and customers- which helped me jump in and contribute meaningfully to my new department from the start. Worry #2: Iรข€™ll be Starting from Scratch You may be within the same company, but after a lateral move, youรข€™ll have a new boss, new co-workers, and new responsibilities to master. And now that youรข€™re in a new functional role, all the contacts you made in your previous position- mentors, clients, and peers at other companies- will no longer be the network you need to move forward. It can seem like even though youรข€™ve only moved down the hall, youรข€™re starting completely from scratch. While itรข€™s true that youรข€™ll need to stretch your networking muscles again to start digging in to this new role, your current network can help you get there. Your current mentor can likely point you in the direction of a new mentor in your new department- and your previous colleagues may have friends or contacts they can introduce you to. Building your network within your new role can be challenging, but in the end, youรข€™ll end up with a network much larger- and even more useful- than your original one. Worry #3: I Wonรข€™t Make More Money For the most part, a lateral move is just that: You move to another role on the same level with similar pay as your current position. But depending on the specific move you make, you may actually be able to use the move to your advantage- even when it comes to your paycheck. When I moved from a supervisor position to a marketing role, HR confirmed it was a lateral move- however, I researched the market value of my new position and ended up negotiating a $4,000 salary boost in my new role. Thatรข€™s the beauty of a lateral move- a new position means a new opportunity to negotiate. Is it always possible? No. You may find out that the move truly doesnรข€™t warrant a salary change. But you may find out that it does, especially if you didnรข€™t negotiate the salary for your previous position. So before you accept the new offer, do your research and make sure youรข€™re getting the full value of your new role. Worry #4: Iรข€™m Mot Moving Up, So I Wonรข€™t Be Challenged When you make a lateral move, it doesnรข€™t always feel like youรข€™ll be doing more- just something different. And without increasing responsibility, will you still feel challenged? Will you feel like youรข€™re advancing professionally? Or will it feel (and when it comes to your resume, look), like youรข€™re staying stagnant? It depends on your specific position, of course, but a lateral move can actually increase your responsibility significantly. A similar role in another department could, for example, carry the responsibility of managing interns or other direct reports. Or, in my case, maybe youรข€™re moving from a managerial position to one without direct reports- but youรข€™ll be responsible for more big projects that have major visibility within the organization. It may look different than your prior role, but it can- and should- be just as (if not more) challenging. When you make a smart, thoughtful lateral move, you can move into a role that you will enjoy much more, will give you more visibility, and will help you build the skills and network you need to advance even quicker than if youรข€™d gone the straight-and-narrow route. Metal That Remembers Its Shape

Metal That Remembers Its Shape Metal That Remembers Its Shape Metal That Remembers Its Shape Most mechanical engineers dont know much about nitinol, even though this intriguing nickel-titanium alloy was discovered in 1959 at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak, MD. The research team made the discovery while searching for materials that could be used in tools for dismantling explosive mines. Now, more than 50 years later, nitinol is the material of choice for select applications in the medical device and aerospace industries. Nitinol is best known for two unique properties that broaden its appeal as a manufacturing material: shape memory and superelasticity. Shape memory is the ability of a part made from nitinol to undergo deformation at one temperature and then return to its original shape, undamaged, when heated above its transformation temperature. Superelasticity occurs within a few degrees just above the transformation temperature, at which point nitinol exhibits extreme elasticity, up to 30 times that of ordinary metal. These incredible qualities are caused by the material changing from its low-temperature monoclinic martensitic structure to a high-temperature cubic austenitic structure. When nitinol is its martensitic state, it can be easily deformed into a new shape that it holds. When heated to its transition temperature, the deformed object transforms to an austenitic structure and reverts to its original shape. The transition temperature can be adjusted by making slight changes to the alloy composition and through heat treatment. A schematic illustrating the shape memory effect of NiTi alloys. Image: Wikimedia Commons Above the transformation temperature, nitinol becomes superelastic. This is caused by martensite that forms in areas of high stress, even though the temperature is in the austenite range. When the stress is released, these martensite zones return to an austenite structure. Nitinol has a high fatigue strength. Above its transformation temperature, it can handle up to an eight percent strain and still return to its original shape. Other attractive physical properties are thermal and electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and kink resistance. Working with Nitinol In order to have the shape-memory function, the part must be shape set. The part is held in a mold under pressure while it is heat-treated at 500 degrees Celsius and then fast-cooled. Then, if the piece is later twisted or deformed below its transformation temperature, it will return to its remembered shape after it reaches the transformation temperature during reheating. Nitinol also has excellent corrosion resistance, the result of a passive titanium oxide layer that protects the base material from corrosion and nickel release. In fact, writes Confluent Medical Technologies, a medical device manufacturer in Fremont, CA, many researchers report that nitinol is more corrosion-resistant than stainless steel. Surface preparation is also critical for good biocompatibility and corrosion performance. A very abrasive material because of its hard titanium-oxide surface, nitinol generates considerable tool wear on milling, turning, and grinding equipment. Carbide tooling is highly recommended, states Confluent. During centerless grinding, ensure adequate cooling lubricant is present. Nitinol can also be electrical discharge machined (EDM), water-jet cut, and laser machined with excellent results. Bear in mind that nitinol is expensive to make, buy, and engineer, so to be commercially successful, these costs must be small relative to the price of the final product, points out Craig Bonsignore, vice president of applied technology for Confluent. This is true for many medical products, where nitinol enables minimally invasive procedures that would otherwise require more costly and/or risky surgery. Applications Abound The unique combination of shape memory, superelasticity, and biocompatibility makes nitinol an ideal material for medical and dental applications. Products include orthodontic arch wire, filters, and bone anchors. The superelastic qualities of nitinol especially benefit stents, mesh-like devices that structurally reinforce blood vessels. Nitinol stents (or heart valves) can be compressed into shapes that fit inside a catheter. When the catheter is positioned at the correct location within a blood vessel, the stent is released and returns to its predetermined shape, holding open the wall of the blood vessel. The aerospace industry is quite invested in shape memory applications, most notably in newer commercial jet engines that can morph in shape to optimize for noise and fuel efficiency at different stages of flight, says Bonsignore. Nitinol is also a key component in robotically controlled instruments, flight control panels, aircraftlanding gear, and thermal actuated controls. Researchers have also developed nitinol nanoparticles for electrical and thermal sensors in devices for aerospace, electronics, optical, biomedical, and petrochemical industries. These particles enable transmission of electrical energy without overheating. Nitinol is also used for manufacturing eyeglass frames, robotics, household appliances, and fire sprinkler systems. In a less serious application, Nitinol enables spoons from the magic shop to bend when placed in hot water. Bonsignore cautions that, although nitinol has some very attractive characteristics, using it comes with significant costs. Dont use nitinol if you dont have to, or if the application cant afford it, he advises. We spend a surprising amount of time trying to talk customers out of using the material. Although industrious engineers can make good progress with some material samples purchased online, simple forming tools, and an air furnace, Bonsignore recommends engaging a manufacturer experienced with the material to avoid common pitfalls and make progress quickly. Many engineers do not appreciate the importance of thermal processing and surface processing to the mechanical and fatigue characteristics of the material, so working with an experienced manufacturer can have a significant influence on performance outcomes. This employer is offering a tempting trade-in for your vacation days

This employer is offering a tempting trade-in for your vacation days This employer is offering a tempting trade-in for your vacation days It sounds like a devilรข€™s bargain: Trade in vacation days to pay off student loans. But thatรข€™s the exchange one company has settled on, and indebted employees are already planning to cash in.At insurance company Unum Group, รข€œemployees get at least 28 days of paid time off,รข€  according to Bloomberg. Meanwhile, its average employee is burdened by $32,000 of debt. So next year, Unumรข€™s 8,500 staff will have the opportunity to opt for student loan relief in exchange for sacrificing days off.Bloomberg reports that รข€œeach day is worth an employeeรข€™s hourly rate for an eight-hour day,รข€ and Unum estimates workers who take advantage of the program will get $1,200 a year on average toward their loans.รข€œWe thought it was a more creative method,รข€ Carl Gagnon, assistant vice president of global financial well-being and retirement programs for Unum, told Bloomberg.People dealing with their own student loans arenรข€™t the only ones affected; parents who are partially responsible for t heir childrenรข€™s debt can also participate.Losing vacation days for loan relief may not seem like a win-win, but at Unum, the generous paid time off policy makes it more of a fair trade. Twenty-eight days of PTO - or more than five work weeks worth of time off - is far more than most workers in this country get, and already, a lot of Americans donรข€™t use all of their PTO because they feel pressure to be at work or donรข€™t have the money to afford travel. When they do use their days off, often times they regret how they were spent. For Unum employees such as Jimmy Valentine, who has $22,000 in debt, the trade-in is worth it, especially when they are unlikely to use all their PTO anyway.รข€œI should take more days off,รข€ Valentine told Bloomberg. รข€œBut I continue to work to make sure I keep up with everything.รข€

Case Study Job Search Goes Mobile

Case Study Job Search Goes Mobile Case Study Job Search Goes Mobile Thereรข€™s no denying that today the majority of web activity takes place via mobile.  The majority of consumers currently own multiple devices and use them to browse everything from their morning news to shopping websites.  This shift in the way we consume media and information means that those looking to reach individuals must adjust their outdated ways of thinking about interaction.   Skeptical as to whether this applies to your recruiting endeavors?  Check out a few stats weรข€™ve collected regarding smartphone and tablet use: In the U.S. there are 235 million smartphone users and that places us at only third place for global users per country. In 2017 63% of internet usage was via mobile and projections have that number reaching the two-thirds mark by the end of 2018 The time spent on a website when browsing via a smartphone or mobile device versus a desktop PC is now nearly equal, bucking the trend that smartphone users stay and read for a shorter time than their PC counterparts. Now that weรข€™ve got you convinced, itรข€™s time to talk about what these numbers mean when applied to a real-world recruiting example.  At Simply Hired, we see comparable trends in how users search, review and apply for open positions.   Take for example a real userรข€™s recent experience letรข€™s call her Sally a nurse practitioner in Utah interested in landing a new gig.  Over the course of four months, we examined her usage of the site and the stats are incredibly useful for anyone looking to crunch the numbers on mobile applicant usage. She clicked on 178 jobs over 120 days, checking in an average of every other day. On a particularly active day, she clicked on a total of 28 jobs. She tended to visit early in the morning or late in the evening. More than half of the time she came to us through her custom Simply Hired email alerts.   Only 30 percent of her visits came from a laptop or desktop PC. About half of those visits were the result of a search on Google for รข€œnurse practitioner Utah.รข€ 10 percent of her visits came from a tablet. About half of those visits were the result of a search on Google. 60 percent of her visits came from a smartphone, and those visits came from her email alerts. What are some of the things we can conclude from our analysis of Sallyรข€™s job search? The above suggests that employers looking for top talent currently working in the space should be aware that their applicants will be searching during their free time before and after work or school.  Simply Hiredรข€™s email alerts are already timed to optimize on this fact arriving early in the AM. The fact that most of Sallyรข€™s interaction on both desktop and smartphone came from clicking through alerts suggests that it pays to be included at the top of the list.  Simply Hired can help promote your open positions, ensuring youรข€™ll be seen among the first and most relevant listings delivered directly to candidatesรข€™ inboxes and fully accessible via smartphone or desktop. Smartphone and mobile device usage is here to stay.  Listings should be optimized for viewing snippets on a smaller screen.  In addition, all websites should be fully accessible for mobile users to ensure a frustrating landing page doesnรข€™t thwart the applicantรข€™s interest. Hopefully, these mobile use statistics were helpful in seeing how trends in data digestion can impact your recruitment process.  Check this space often as we continue our exploration of trends in the hiring marketplace and provide updates with how Simply Hired is working to ensure weรข€™re the best possible partner in the employment game.

7 Ways to Spice Up Your Resume

7 Ways to Spice Up Your Resume 7 Ways to Spice Up Your Resume With unemployment rising, increasing numbers of applicants for each job, and recruiters struggling to keep up, it can sometimes feel as though youre sending your resume into a black hole. You send hundreds of applications and never hear back and what makes it worse is that you know you are qualified for the jobs. But heres the thing if your resume is like most of the resumes I see, its not doing you any favors. Here are 10 ways you can improve your resume and increase your hit rate: 1. Make it about action and impact: Dont take up more than 10-15% of your resume describing job responsibilities as an employer, I dont care what you were supposed to do, I care what impact you made. Show me! 2. Spice it up with references: When you buy a product especially online, dont you like to see testimonials or customer reviews? You can apply the same principle to your resume. Pull a couple of glowing quotes from LinkedIn, your performance reviews or customer thank you letters and put them in a prominent place on your resume. 3. Understand your unique value: Ask people who know you and those who have worked with you, what makes you especially good at what you do. Look back over your career for common themes. And most importantly, understand what your target audience (employers) are looking for. 4. Invite them to go online: If you know you have established a good online presence (and if you havent, you need to get to work now!) add the line Feel free to google me for more information. This conveys confidence and at least some of your potential employers will take you up on it. 5. Replace the objective with a value summary: Dont tell me what you want out of your next job, tell me what youll do for me. Start with the headline How I will add value 6. Consider a philosophy section: Tell employers how you approach your work. For example, a sales person might say I never do the hard sell instead I build relationships, I understand the customers needs, and I use that knowledge and the trust Ive built, to turn prospects into long-term clients. An admin assistant might say I am so organized that Ill know what you need before you ask me! 7. Add some personality: Use words that sound like you, not words you read on someone elses resume. Everyone is results-oriented and accomplished according to their resumes, but do they ever really describe themselves that way? These are just 7 ways that you can bring some life to your resume, and create a document that grabs attention instead of blending in with all the others. For more tips, feel free to sign up for my free resume writing course. And if you have other ways to spice up a resume, please take a moment to share them in the comments. Id love to hear them!

Tips for Dealing with Invasive Job Applications

Tips for Dealing with Invasive Job Applications Tips for Dealing with Invasive Job Applications When youรข€™re applying for a job, it makes sense that a prospective employer would want to know your skill set and previous work experience. But sometimes they dig a bit deeper- and in some cases, maybe a little too deep. Sometimes, job applications can feel kind of invasive. After all, does the hiring manager really need to know on your job application if you have a disability or not, or whether you were born in the U.S.? While the vetting process can vary from company to company, more often than not employers ask these types of questions early on to assess how well their recruitment practices are. Theyรข€™re looking to gauge if the talent pool from which they have to choose represents a broad range of applicants. And companies that make it a point to have a diverse team might want data on age, race, and gender identification. So what should you do if youรข€™re faced with invasive job applications? Here are some tips: Decide whether youre comfortable sharing certain information. If the job application requires you to include any overly personal information that has nothing to do with your qualifications for the job, such as your marital status, for example, decide how it makes you feel. Uneasy? Totally cool? If youre at all uncomfortable with divulging any information, dont (see more below!). Or, inquire about why theyre asking before you answer. Having some context might help. Talk to your network. Letรข€™s say that youรข€™re filling out an online application, and short of asking for your blood type, the employer seemingly wants to know everything about you. If youรข€™re unsure how to proceed, consider asking your network- or even an attorney- for advice. Maybe someone already works for the company or knows someone who does, and can let you know what working there is really like. After all, an intrusive job application could be a glimpse into the daily workings of the company, which might not be what you want in an employer. Or, perhaps they really, genuinely take interest in their employees lives and are simply asking because they want to get to know you better. Express your hesitations or concerns. If the idea of providing your salary history  on a job application, for example, is unsettling to you, leave it out and  express your feelings and/or concerns to the employer. Though you shouldnt feel obligated to defend your choices or feelings, it may help your case. Plus, if you skip over questions, your application may not go through or you could get an error message from the applicant tracking system (ATS). You may be better off emailing the employer separately to avoid those situations. Wait to answer them in the interview. If youre more comfortable explaining your answer to a particular question in person, rather than just writing it on the application, or checking off a box, do so! Again, if the application is rejected by the ATS, you may have to come up with another plan or reach out to the hiring manager. But simply explain that there are a few questions or answers youd like to elaborate on and would prefer to leave them blank until you have a chance to speak with someone in person. Hopefully theyll be understanding! Address these questions/answers in the cover letter. Letรข€™s say that youรข€™re a disabled worker looking for a remote job. Before clicking the Yes box on the job application indicating that you are disabled (and being afraid that it might be held against you, even though that would be illegal), you can address your disability in the cover letter. For instance, you can mention that you are disabled but also point out your strengths as an employee. So in theory, youรข€™re answering the question- but on your terms. Know someone looking for a job? Refer a friend to with this link- youรข€™ll get a month free service and theyรข€™ll get 30% off!
